F-91W Backlight Mod

I have been thinking about this since last week, and today, it finally happened. I tried modifying the backlight of one of the iconic watch in the world, the Casio F-91W.

Casio watches are nice, and I love them, especially with some of their affordable models, like the F91W. The downside is the backlight; it doesn’t illuminate the whole watch since the small LED is mounted on the right side, making it harder to look at the time in the dark despite with the backlight.

I watched how to improve the backlight on YouTube, and luckily, there’s a tutorial for that. All I needed was just aluminum or kitchen foil. What’s the deal with the aluminum foil? Why do I need it? The foil acts as a “light spreader” to evenly distribute the backlight throughout the watch since there’s a thing in the plastic that blocks the light. So, putting something reflective like foil makes the light bounce back.

I started by disassembling the watch, removing the board and the battery, and locating what blocks the light. After that, I  cut a small rectangular piece of foil and just lodged it on the thing that blocks the light. After four attempts, I finally got a satisfactory result. The light improved and spreads evenly now, making it look like an illuminator.

Here’s the comparison (Day and Night):

I’ll place the video reference here in case you want to try this. Thank you so much, Wrist Action, for this excellent tutorial.
